Causes And Types Of Stretch Marks
Stretch marks (abbreviated as SM for the remainder of the text); occur anywhere and everywhere on the body. They are the result of what we will can expansion and contraction, demands made on it to adapt, adjust and yes… STRETCH! Our skin is flexible and pliable. It moves and morphs with us. Think of what happens to it when a woman gets pregnant, we grow taller, wider, heavier, and older – it changes and transforms with us. It responds and sometimes as the fibers that connect cells and tissue damage, break, reach their maximum elasticity, they break, tear, rip and leave dreaded markings, edges, bumps and scaly ‘scars’ on the surface of our epi-dermis or outer-layers of our skin. SM often occurs as our weight fluctuates. Skin fibers, cells, membranes and walls get pulled, stretched beyond capacity, demand, constantly until they ‘give’ and break. Both men and women battle this on-going tug-of-war. These ‘scars’ our skin carry, show and tell the story and path of our lives. This physical evidence of this process is now the aftermath that we want and have (some MUST!) to deal with. We conceal and camouflage. We try to get rid of them through diet, exercise, topical treatments and other interventions. Girls and women, men and young adults, even athletes can get them AND NOT JUST WOMEN! Many online sources quote the statistics of occurrence as high as 70% of teenage girls and as high as 90%+ of pregnant women. Puberty and growth spurts all contribute to leaving its mark on our skins as we grow up, develop and come into our own. Our bodies are not stagnant, but dynamic and on a path of evolutionary proportions. We change and morph and our skins are right there with us, taking on this challenge, some battles easier than others. Some inevitably leaves their mark – PERMANENTLY! The sooner we accept some of the fact and undeniable characteristics and issues of SM, like once you have them, you cannot get rid of them, just reduce them! THE BETTER for all of us! Many argue that hormones are to blame and that it is NOT JUST ANOTHER WEIGHT PROBLEM! IT IS NOT ONLY FAT, OVERWEIGHT OR OBESE people that have to deal with unsightly SM! Here are just some of the most common responses and action plans people implement to deal/cope/address SM: Embarrassment Hiding and concealing, covering Denying Ignoring Wishing away Slapping on topical treatments Invasive, costly, repetitious treatments and interventions to get rid of them! Here are some of the more generally accepted ‘hormonal’ or endocrine ‘causes’, or more accurately stated, contributing factors to developing SM: Negative emotion, depression or extreme unhappiness (emotions are neuro-peptides and affect the processes and organs in your body) Developmental factors and stages, growth and puberty for adolescents and budding your adults, (both boys and girls) vitamins and nutrients deficiencies or lacking levels of presence in the body Pregnancy Rapid weight gain/loss Sudden change in physical or environmental conditions Medications and steroid use Insufficient skin properties, building blocks and elements, like collagen and elastin (the main ingredients and connective tissue of your skin) SM are NOT random! When they start becoming visible on the surface, they are actually evidence of decay and break-up of these connective tissues, fibers and skin-elements, under pressure, strain, stretch and demand breaking, tearing and ripping, rising to the surface as those dreaded SM! SM develops anywhere and spares no one! They are however NOT a medical condition that has to be treated of cured. They are typically NOT painful and most of us take little notice of them until it is almost undeniably VISIBLE and THERE FOR ALL TO SEE! These SM also vary in their appearance from a slight pinkish red, pale skin-coloration, purple, to silvery white. These are reflective of the different stages of SM development. You can find them literally everywhere and anywhere on your body. Even the facial areas, neck, head and shoulders, under and upper arms, lower torso and more. SM is not situation or condition that has to be cured. Most of us will be able to attest to personal experience, shock and horror at discovering these SM on our bodies. They are part of us and when they appear, we are seemingly stuck with them. You can minimize the appearance of SM, BUT NOT GET RID OF THEM PERMANENTLY. Topical treatments and lotions are the most common ways of treating and dealing with stretch marks (if we remember to lather them on that is!). There are not necessarily highly effective solutions present for SM (YET)! Medical practitioners will advise you that it is not ‘curable’ and not a disease, so you will get little empathy regarding SM. It causes dis-ease, but is NOT A PRIORITY or life-threatening priority for them! Worrying about your SM does not mean that you are superficial, worrying for nothing, or vain. If it matters to you to get some answers, strategies and solutions for coping with SM, then this guide is meant for you. There are lots of products, personal steps and treatments that you can utilize (including natural methods) for coping well with minimizing the appearance of SM! For most of us, SM is also a highly personal and intimate matter. We do not like being seen with them. They affect your self-image, focusing on your imperfections and shortcomings and questioning your self-worth follows quickly as we climb the ladder of inference quickly, leaping to the wrong conclusions and mistaken quick judgments. You do have some recourse of action at your disposal and tools in the arsenal to deal effectively with SM. Our skins are like the telltale signs and evidence pads bearing witness to what is going on inside. What we use and choose to fuel our bodies with, will definitely find a way of expressing itself on the canvas we call our skin. Yes, SM has something to do with diet and nutrition as well. It is not all genetics, hormones and skin morphing! This is one part of the process and outcome that you can in fact control. Our bodies are in a constant state of flux and equilibrium (balance). It tries to make sense of good, bad, ugly and deal with it accordingly. This also pertains to having and developing stretch marks. |
